It all started with a vision—and a lot of heart.

Railway Café began as a wild idea, a dream sparked by a love for good food and a deep connection to our hometown of Bassett, Virginia.

If you’ve ever driven through Bassett, you’ve probably seen the quiet streets lined with old buildings—some weathered, some empty. It might make you wonder: “What was this place like back in the day?”

The answer? It was thriving. Bassett was once a bustling little town full of life. There were shops, restaurants, a movie theater, a train depot—even a barber shop where neighbors swapped stories. Henry County was a hub for textiles and furniture, known around the world for its craftsmanship.

But like many towns, things changed. Industry moved on, factories closed, and buildings that were once the heart of our community sat empty—waiting for someone to believe in them again.

That’s where we come in.

After nearly 15 years in the restaurant industry, I decided it was time to chase my dream. I wanted to create a place where people could gather, eat well, and feel at home—a place that could help bring a little life back to downtown Bassett.

Then I found the space. What used to be a barbershop—and a handful of other small businesses over the years—became the spot where Railway Café would come to life.

We opened our doors in 2020, right in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. It wasn’t easy, but with hard work, creativity, and a lot of support from our community, we made it through—and kept going.

Today, Railway Café is known for cozy vibes, hometown hospitality, and food that’s made with love right here in our kitchen. From scratch-made breakfast to flavorful lunches and homemade sauces, we take pride in doing things the right way.

We’ve been honored to win several local awards over the years—including Best Breakfast, Best Lunch (five years in a row!), and Best Carry-Out. But our biggest reward is seeing familiar faces walk through our doors each day.

Railway Café isn’t just about food. It’s about bringing people together, keeping local history alive, and being part of something bigger than ourselves.
